SPECIAL PROGRAMS OVERVIEW

Federal and state funds are intended to supplement, rather than supplant, programs to assist our students.

Title I serves students in Grades 1-6 who are below grade level in reading and/or math skills, as determined by reading readiness tests (TPRI), ITBS, state assessment non-mastery and/or classroom grades.  Danbury ISD has established a Literacy Lab with computers, reading readiness software and math materials, and an instructional area for small groups of students.  An adult literacy class will begin in the spring semester.

Career and Technology Education funds are available to enhance career awareness and career or college preparation for students in Grades 9-12.  DISD belongs to a consortium in which smaller districts combine federal monies and maximize funding through cooperative spending.  Region IV acts as the fiscal agent for this consortium.

English as a Second Language (ESL) services are provided for students identified as limited-English proficient, as determined by an English proficiency test.    Early acquisition of English offers limited-English proficient students an opportunity to be successful in the classroom and on state performance assessments (TAKS).

Special Education services are provided for students with special needs through Gulf Coast Cooperative.  DISD also has five teachers certified in special education on campus to serve the needs of our students on a daily basis.

Compensatory Education programs offer individualized support for students who are at risk of failing state performance standards or of dropping out of school.  The purpose is to increase achievement and reduce the drop out rate of students in at-risk situations.  Each campus develops a plan, depending on the needs of their students.  Senate Bill 702 requires changes in the State Compensatory Education Program (SCE).  You can access this information at the website listed below.   Funding for Compensatory Education is based on the number of economically disadvantaged students.

Migrant Education Program requires that school districts identify all migrant students and offer instructional assistance over and above the instruction being received from the classroom teacher and/or additional support services.

Dyslexia services are offered at DISD from a trained teacher.  This program is not funded, but is a state mandate.

Section 504 provides a safety net for students with disabilities who may not qualify for Special Education services, but whose learning is limited to a substantial extent as a result of a physical or mental impairment.  A 504 Committee determines whether a student qualifies for Section 504 services, based on the student's academic record, documentation of disability, and information provided by parents and teachers.
