What
Do You See?
Junior-High
School Students
A group of students who have been brought together for a weekend retreat
share experiences of stereotyping and describe how others’ perception of them
differs from the way they actually are. Looking across the room at a set of four
posters, each featuring a portrait of a young person, the students describe what
kind of person they see in each poster. Upon examining the poster up close and
reading the fine print of what the four young people say about themselves, the
students acknowledge that these statements have now changed their original
perceptions, and they agree that judging by first appearance can be a mistake.
