A calendar with test dates, scholarships, college preview days, etc is posted on the bulletin board and will soon be posted on the Danbury High School website. Not all scholarships have deadlines to be placed on the calendar so keep checking the newsletter for deadlines as well as the specifics of each scholarship. Keeping up with deadlines is still the responsibility of the student.
Single Scholarship List The following scholarship opportunities in this newsletter, as well as the ones listed on the previous three seniors newsletters, have been placed on one list in chronological order by their deadlines (scholarships with no deadlines are listed last).This list has been posted on the front bulletin board titled ‘Senior Information.’ Ask Mr. Herbert for a copy if you would like one.
Walmart – 2008 Sam Walton COMMUNITY Scholarship. This scholarship is a non-renewable $1000 award for the first year of undergraduate study at an approved college or university. To qualify a student must be a graduating high school senior and may not be a Wal-mart or Sam’s Club associate, or the child or legal dependent of a Wal-mart or Sam’s Club associate. See the following website for details and to apply (www.walmartfoundation.org). January 14, 2008 is the postmark deadline for online submission and mailing of all required documents. Over $83 million has been awarded to students throughout the country through this program since 1981.
Miscellaneous grants/scholarships are available to qualified students from the THECB (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board). Are you a foster child? Want to be an Emergency Medical Tech (EMT) or Professional Nurse? Was your parent a veteran who died or was wounded? Are you graduating early? If so you may be eligible for a grant or scholarship. These situations and others may give you the opportunity for a scholarship. This website (www.thecb.state.tx.us/ ) shows students who plan to attend a Texas college or university, grants offered through this government agency.
Coca-Cola Share the Dream Essay Contest (Angleton Coca-Cola Bottling Company). The contest is sponsored by Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc., The Kroger Company, The Houston Astros, Vincent Communications and KBXX-FM. Since its inception, this program has awarded 297 students with more than $185,000. The contest takes place from February 1-29, 2008. Students in grades 9-12 in our area are encouraged to participate in the contest. The grand prize winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship and a personal computer; second place a $1,500 scholarship and personal computer; third place $1000 and a personal computer; and the remaining 20 finalists will each receive a $500 scholarship. In addition everyone who enters will have a chance to win a personal computer in a random drawing. This year’s essay question is: “Reality TV is a huge part of today’s culture. What impact do you believe it has made on your self esteem, body image and social behaviors?”
USDA/1890 National Scholars Program. Requirements – must attend Prairie View A&M or one other of the eighteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions in any field of study of agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or other related disciplines. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition, fees, books, use of laptop computers and software, printers, employment and employee benefits for each of the four years they pursue a bachelor’s degree. Room and board is also provided by the partnering institution. Recipients are required to work one year (with pay) at USDA for each year they receive the scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2008.
Texas Lutheran University 2008 Pacesetter Event and Scholarships. TLU will host a Sunday (PACE event) on their campus in Seguin, TX. Qualified PACE students will: be awarded scholarships at several levels, up to $15,000 a year, learn more about TLU, among other items on the agenda. Students must be accepted to TLU, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, have an SAT/ACT score of 1250/28 or higher or rank in top 10% of class with a minimum of 1100/24 SAT/ACT. Application deadline is February 1, 2008 and the date of the PACE Event is February 17, 2008.
Nsoro Foundation Scholarships. Requirements – high school senior in foster/kinship care, complete the Distinguished Achievement Plan, attend college in the United States full-time, earn a GPA of at least 2.5, plan to pursue a post-secondary degree or certificate, score at least 900 on the SAT or 21 on the ACT. Scholarships are up to $20,000. Essay and letters of recommendation required. See Mr. Herbert if you are in foster-care for this scholarship and other opportunities. Deadline is February 15, 2008.
National Society Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) NATIONAL Scholarships. A variety of scholarships are offered through the National DAR. See Mr. Herbert for details.
YouthLaunch 2008 Scholarship for Outstanding Service. The scholarship honors high school seniors across Texas who lead and serve in their communities, and inspire their peers to get involved as well. The scholarship is a non-renewable $3,000 scholarship. In 2008, three scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors who attend school inside the state of Texas. For more information visit www.youthlaunch.org. You can also download the scholarship application form on the website. The deadline is February 29, 2008.
2008 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship is a $15,000, four-year award. Applications must include a copy of the applicant’s official SAT/ACT scores. Eligible applicants will be seniors ranked in the top half of their class, meet minimum SAT/ACT standards, be US citizens, and plan to attend college in Texas. Applicants must submit application directly to the Show. Unlike the HLSR Metropolitan Program, there is no screening at the high school level nor is there a limit on applications. There is no guarantee of each participating public high school having an Opportunity Scholarship recipient. Of the 100 awards to be made, 44 will go to HISD students and the remaining 56 are open to the other participating districts. A school is not limited in either the number of applicants or the number of recipients of the award. United Daughters of the Confederacy, Lamar Fontaine Chapter #33, Alvin, TX, extends to our 2008 graduating seniors the opportunity to participate in their $500 scholarship program. Recipient must be an American citizen and a descendant of a Confederate soldier and must use scholarship at a Texas school. Deadline to turn to guidance office is March 25, 2008.
Pocahontas Scholarship (National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century. Open to any male or female Native American student enrolled in any medical field. $500 scholarship may be applied for after completing one semester of college. Student will need their tribe number or a notarized letter from a family member, preferably a parent or grandparent stating whom the student is a descendant of, giving both the Tribe name and Ancestor. Classical Singers High School Competition 2008. Compete for a full-tuition scholarship to a major university or conservatory and $5,500 in cash prizes, sponsored by the Intermezzo Foundation. Receive valuable feedback from actual university faculty, gain live competition and audition experience, by competing in this competition on January 26, 2008 at the University of Houston. National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) ASA Underwood Chapter LOCAL Scholarship. This scholarship goes to a graduating senior from one of the eight high schools in the Brazoria County. The recipient must use the $500 award at either Alvin Community College or Brazosport College. The scholarship criteria are based on academic achievement and an indication of financial need. The deadline is March 15, 2008.
Dow - UT Alumni Endowed Scholarship – Must be child/grandchild of Dow employee or retiree. Must enroll at the University of Texas and seek a degree from one of the following colleges: the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, or the College of Natural Sciences. Scholarships are chosen based on high school or college grades, their score on either the ACT or SAT test score, extra curricular activities, or previous college work.
Cottey College, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter DA (Lake Jackson, TX) Scholarships. Cottey College is a two-year, independent, liberal arts and sciences college for women in Nevada, Missouri.
